How we make money

Carpoolin acknowledges that this kind of service does not lend itself to generating a lot of money.

On top of that, how do you continue making anything from Users that share car rides together?

This is the core of why I think a service like Carpoolin doesn't exist.

Good thing I'm looking to play the long game, one that builds a brighter future for the people that use it.

If it's not obvious I'm trying to keep costs low, but also juggle the overhead costs of continued development and maintaining the thing.

Through the App

The App's base model is something similar to what you see on Spotify or Youtube.

You have full access to the App and all of its features, plus no Ads!

Premium

Some features are capped the following are perks of a Premium account.

  • Ability to list more Trips

  • Ability to send more Trip requests per day

  • No message limit on your inbox

  • Ability to add Favourite Users

  • And increased map refresh limits

This goes for $30/six months.

Paid Trips

We also handle payments through the App, if you choose to list Paid Trips.

To handle this we're going with a Wallet feature.

The reason for this is to reduce fees for Users who prefer this.

We will be deducting fees from these transactions;

  1. A Gateway Merchant fee
5% for regular Users 2.5% for Premium

  2. An App fee
2.8% for regular and 1% for Premium

Beyond

More details to come, see our Roadmap :)

For You

Who determines how much my trip costs?

Sure, you take a fee from transactions through the App. But how is the price of the Trip calculated?

This -- we believe is up to the individual parties involved to determine.

Trip distances can range from going to work or across the country.

We don't mandate any rule you should apply to YOUR trip.

If you're happy to share your car and time with another person then we'll stay out of it and assume you do the right thing with your collective interests in mind.

We have details on what carpooling means legally in NZ, see out Legal page for more details.

And with this in-mind we believe you should go ahead and do what is right within your circumstances.
