Carpoolin Privacy Policy

Carpoolin (operated by Save Man Limited) is committed to protecting the privacy of our users. We believe in "privacy by design," ensuring you can share rides without sharing your entire identity.

This policy outlines how we handle your data in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.

1. Information Collection and Use

We collect only the information necessary to provide a safe and functional carpooling platform.

  • Account Credentials: To create an account, we require a phone number and/or email address. These are used strictly for verification and security and are never displayed publicly on the platform.

  • Usernames: Unlike other platforms, we do not require your legal name. You choose a Username which serves as your identity within the community.

  • Trip Data: We collect the start and end points of trips you post. We do not require these to be your home or work address; you are encouraged to select public meeting points.

  • Usage Information: We collect non-personal data (device type, IP address) to optimise app performance and security.

2. Location Privacy (No Real-Time Tracking)

Your privacy is paramount. Unlike many transport apps:

  • No Persistent Tracking: Carpoolin does not track your real-time movements or monitor your location in the background.

  • Regional Context: We may request access to your device's location solely to determine which region or city you are in. This helps us show you relevant local trips. Once your trip points are set, we stop accessing your location.

3. Data Sharing Between Users

To keep the community safe while maintaining privacy, we distinguish between what is public and what is private:

What Stays PRIVATE

  • Your Phone Number

  • Your Email Address

  • Your real-time GPS location -used to draw the Map

  • Your legal name and home address -never asked for

Note: Your contact details are only shared if you explicitly choose to provide them to another user via private message or in person.

4. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Retention: We store your personal information only for the duration of your account being open.

  • Deletion: You may request to delete your profile at any time. Once requested, all personal data associated with your account will be permanently erased. This process takes up to 28 days to complete across all our systems.

5. Data Security

Save Man Limited takes reasonable measures to protect the security and integrity of user information. While no system is 100% secure, we prioritise the protection of your data through industry-standard security protocols.

6. Third-Party Services

We use third-party tools for analytics and payment processing. These services have their own privacy policies. We do not sell your personal data to advertisers or third parties.

7. New Zealand Privacy Act 2020

This policy is governed by the laws of New Zealand. Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to access any personal information we hold about you and ask for it to be corrected.
